Today’s Worku gives us CLICK, a tiny word with a lot of structural power. It can be a switch, a phone gesture, a camera-like moment, a final shutdown—or simply the sound that tells us something has changed. Diana uses that especially well: a comforting FLICK of the light switch is followed by the CLICK of nails down the hall, and suddenly the poem belongs to suspense. Mark takes the sound toward impermanence, ending with a dot fading into darkness. And Mick turns one innocent little click into the possibility of a shark bite. With a word this short, the strongest poems make the sound itself become the turn.

Today’s Worku gets RUNNY, a word that sounds almost too ordinary to carry much poetic weight—and that may be exactly why this round works so well. The poems let it belong to eggs, sauce, tears, cake, blood, and noses, then use those ordinary meanings as springboards for something larger or stranger. Diana’s reincarnation poem is a terrific example of the haiku turn: time runs out, another life may begin, and then the cosmic question becomes “Next life: eggs RUNNY?” Mick takes the opposite route, using an August runny nose to pull a meditation on winter and the future back into the present moment. Sometimes the humble constraint gives the poem its best surprise.

Today’s Worku looks backward with OLDEN, a word that naturally invites nostalgia, complaint, history, or mock history. The risk is that the poem can become vague—“things were different then”—without giving the reader anything concrete to hold onto. The stronger entries avoid that by making the past do something specific. Debbie brings back leeches, Lari invokes the magnetic stars of another era, and Mick’s second version gives the round its sharpest turn: what once sounded like bleeding to the end becomes, in modern times, simply “Apply bandage.” That’s a nice reminder of what a turn can do in haiku: the first two lines build one world, and the last line quietly changes the rules.

Today’s Worku serves up PRAWN, a concrete word that comes with a strong visual shape and a built-in whiff of comedy. The challenge is making it more than just the funny thing at the end. Diana does that especially well by building a whole predatory sequence before the discarded prawn appears as the cat’s latest prize. Auntie jj turns the curled shape itself into a design reveal, while Lari uses it as the small reward that rescues a dreary day. Mick goes full miniature epic, where a toad lifts a frond, summons his brawn, and prepares for battle with a prawn. The word is small, but this round gives it plenty to do.

Today’s Worku follows TRACE, a word that can point backward, map a path, record a shadow, uncover ancestry, or mark what remains after something is gone. That range makes it a generous constraint, but the stronger poems still give the tracing a reason. Diana turns it toward lineage and mortality; Starr uses light and shadow to trace time; Debbie traces a route after a roadside setback. auntie jj gives the word a particularly neat comic turn: the bread is braided, risen, buttered, and then “consumed without TRACE!” The constraint is about following what remains, but several of today’s poems are really about what disappears.
