RULER gave today’s poets two very different tools: something that measures, and someone who holds power. That split produced a particularly nice range of sub-genres. Diana uses the literal ruler as an old-school instrument of discipline, while Debbie takes the same object into pure zappai-like absurdity, felling an entire eucalyptus tree just to make one. Robo and Mark turn toward senryu-like Worku, where rulers govern corrupt realms or finally pack up when freedom arrives. It’s a good example of how one ordinary word can measure inches in one poem and power in the next.
