SHACK gave this round a surprisingly broad range, from beach cookouts and absurd escapes to property disputes and much darker domestic territory. Diana turns a loose fence into a whole chain of bad decisions, while Lari makes the constraints disappear into an easygoing grill-and-beach scene. Robo gives SHACK a slightly seedy narrative setting, and several entries lean into the word’s built-in comic roughness.
The strongest poems made SHACK feel like the consequence of what came before rather than simply the required destination. Sometimes that consequence was funny, sometimes ominous, and sometimes painfully human—but in each case the final word worked best when the poem had already built a reason for us to arrive there.
