RIVER gave this round a strong sense of movement and place, but the poems got there by very different routes. Mark turns the river into the site of a suddenly reconsidered swim, Diana builds a dark little cause-and-effect story around LIVER, FIVER, and RIVER, and Debbie takes a failed pot roast somewhere unexpectedly ominous.
The stronger entries made RIVER feel like part of the poem’s logic rather than simply the required landing word. Sometimes it became a setting, sometimes a destination, and sometimes the final beat of a joke. Even the quieter pieces benefited from the word’s natural imagery, giving the group a nice mix of absurdity, menace, landscape, and everyday observation.

A RELIC of an oven
A RIVER awaits…
