Lari’s poem takes a clever route by making the tribe the Worku community itself—the poet searches through TRIPE and TRIKE before landing on TRIBE, so the constraint becomes the joke and the turn. Elsewhere, tribes are built through food rituals, shared criticism, pride, Tuesday routines, and cultural rules. The best of these poems make belonging feel like something people actually do, not just something they name.

Today’s Worku serves ASPIC, which may be one of those constraint words that arrives with its own comic baggage. It’s specific, old-fashioned, visually odd, and almost impossible to use neutrally. The stronger poems lean into that rather than fighting it: Lari turns aspic into the dreaded potluck surprise, auntie jj makes it the likely source of gastrointestinal regret, and Diana treats a wobbling kitchen failure almost like a laboratory specimen. Mick goes fully surreal, where a toad cooking fiddleheads decides the problem is simply that the dish needs more sophistication: “APPLY some ASPIC!” Sometimes an awkward constraint becomes easier once the poem stops trying to make it respectable.

Today’s Worku lets LOOSE into the room, and the word turns out to have plenty of range: freedom, texture, clothing, spilled coffee, romantic openness, even the condition of a custard. The challenge is that LOOSE often wants to become an idiom—let loose, loose cannon, on the loose—so the craft question becomes whether the familiar phrase can still produce a fresh scene or turn. Diana does that nicely: a string of motherly instructions at scout camp suddenly becomes “Mother! Lemme LOOSE…”, and the poem changes from hygiene checklist to a child’s demand for independence. Elsewhere, coffee escapes, love opens up, custard firms, and a suspiciously elegant stole hangs waiting in a burglar’s path.
